Leveraging Technology to Hire for Fit and Create an Environmental Culture of Care
    By: Pamela S. Starlin

The traditional role of the environmental services attendant must transition into the role of an adequately trained infection preventionist and, equally important, a hospitality ambassador. The patient’s interaction and comfort with the environmental services attendant has a substantial impact on the overall perception of cleanliness and the competence of the staff member. Hiring for fit and being able to identify the natural born connectors and promoters among the task-oriented individuals normally drawn into the environmental services role becomes paramount.

Maintaining Hygienically Clean Health Care Textiles Within a Health Care Facility
    By: John F. Scherberger

Health care textiles are a crucial component in the care and treatment of patients if positive outcomes are to be realized. The absence of guidance from regulatory organizations pertaining to the handling, internal transportation, and storage of hygienically clean textiles (HCTs) within the confines of health care facilities (HCFs) brings into question the hygienic integrity of such textiles. The lack of guidance and best practice standards in health care facilities brings into question the confidence needed to assure that a chain of infection prevention practice is in place in health care facilities. This document addresses the shortcomings and provides suggested direction and support.

    Comprehensive Training Program

By Michael Catanzaro, FAHE, MREH, CLLM, CHESP

The days of clean, shiny floors being Environmental Services’ number one priority are long gone. Our departments have evolved and our role has become exceedingly more complex.

Training must begin when a new staff member walks through the door and should follow them their entire career. A comprehensive and regulatory compliant training program begins with hospital and departmental orientation, and continues with regular departmental meetings and in-services, with meaningful annual reviews rounding out the program and adding to the communication process.
